UNIT 4: Week Two

Starter: Mood board review

Lesson Aims: To create a series of fabric samples exploring new techniques in response to your chosen theme/subject matter 

Lesson Objectives (during these lessons you will):

1. Review your mood board 

2. Learn a minimum of 1 new technique 

3. Create 4-5 small samples developing your new technique and combining it with existing techniques

The following are suggestions of new techniques you may wish to explore - please refer to instructions in class

• Shibori
• Felting

READING WEEK HOMEWORK

(past student examples)

• Continue to develop your samples so that you have 3-4 strong samples (this may mean re visiting a technique and discarding an initial sample - remember to be selective and present your best work)
• Present them on BOARD 2 'Fabric Sampling'
• When presenting your work ensure you include clear visual references in the form of: drawings, photographs, collages 
• Act upon any suggestions for improvement given for your mood board

DEADLINE: MONDAY 24TH FEBRUARY 

EXTENSION TASK: You may wish to undertake a exhibition, location or gallery visit relevant to your chosen topic. Refer to the powerpoint shown in week one for suggestions of places and details of how to present the visit. 

UNIT 4: Week One

Lesson Aims: To have an introduction to Unit 4 and begin to create initial responses to chosen theme

Lesson Objectives (during these lesson you will):
1. Understand the requirements, workload, dates and deadlines for Unit 4
2. Complete a mind map in response to the exam themes
3. Complete initial research into your chosen exam theme
4. Present your research in the form of a mood board

Lesson 1
1. Introduction to the exam theme

2. Mind Mapping

Lesson 2 (groups 1 and 2)

Begin presenting mood board in response to chosen theme. You should include a range of images, samples and drawings (see introduction slide show above for examples and tips!) 

In lesson 2 you will work on 4 initial fabric samples which will be included in your mood board

NO ACCESS TO THE TEXTILES ROOM WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY THIS WEEK! YOU WILL WORK INDEPENDENTLY (see below for details!)

Lesson 2 (group 3) - independently

Begin work on mood board this should include researching subject matter for your mood board:

• Visit the library - photocopy technique instructions and other relevant imagery
• Use pinterest 
• Include at least 5 images of 'subject matter' on your mood board

Bring the images/info you find to the lesson on friday to begin presenting your mood board! 

Lesson 3 (groups 1 and 2) - independently 

Continue to work on mood board - this should include researching subject matter for your mood board:

• Visit the library - photocopy technique instructions and other relevant imagery
• Use pinterest 
• Include at least 5 images of 'subject matter' on your mood board

Lesson 3 (group 3)

Creating mood board! You will work on 4 initial fabric samples which will be included in your mood board

Lesson 43-53: Final Outcome

Lesson Aims: To continue development of 'Final Piece' continually reflecting upon areas for improvement and documentation of developments in sketchbook

Lesson Objectives (during these lessons you will):

1. Continue working on your final outcome

2. Set yourself a clear list of tasks at the beginning of each week to ensure you keep on track

3. Have one to ones to discuss progress and target key areas for improvement

4. Continue to reflect upon your work ensure you act upon feedback given!

Tasks/Key Focus Areas

SKETCHBOOK/BOARD HAND IN - Monday 13th January

This will be the final time you will receive written formative feedback in your sketchbook before the deadline.

SETTING TASKS! 

At the beginning of the week you must set yourself a clear list of tasks to complete! This can be done in a variety of formats, it is about what works for you! Here are a few suggestions:

• Post it notes
• To do list (in the back of your sketchbook!)
• Reminders (on your phone!)
• Download the app - todoist (works on android and iPhone!) 

Make sure you pick something that works for you and make sure you refer to it at the start of each lesson!

You have 10 lessons till the deadline! 

FINAL DEADLINE

FRIDAY 31ST JANUARY 2013! 

Homework:

To continue working on your final outcome - remember you should be spending a minimum of 4.5 hours outside of lesson time on this, each week! 

Lesson 40-42: Final Outcome

Lesson Aims: To continue development of 'Final Piece' and to identify key areas for improvement 

Lesson Objectives (during this lesson you will):
1. Have a one to one this week to give your key areas for improvement or extension tasks for the Christmas break 
2. Set yourself a clear list of tasks to complete over the Christmas Break 
3. To continue working on your final outcome 

TASKS

KEY FOCUS To ensure that you have completed components of your final outcome that can only be completed at college to ensure you have pieces to work into over Christmas e.g. transfer printing must be completed here with the heat press! 

ONE TO ONE During your one to one we will discuss key areas for improvement in your sketchbook/on boards and/or extension activities to enhance your work further 

Homework:
1. Continue to work on your final outcome
2. Act upon areas for improvement discussed during one to ones and reflecting upon written feedback in the back of your sketchbook/board
3. To complete amendments to your personal study following your feedback - Please email this to me cplatt@farnborough.ac.uk by Wednesday 8th January 

You will hand your sketchbook/boards in for a final written assessment upon return! First lesson back!

Lessons 37-39: Final Outcome

Lesson Aims: To begin creation of 'Final Piece'

Lesson Objectives (during this lesson you will):
1. Have a one to one this week to discuss the grade you are currently working at and the grade you are predicted overall
2. Continue sampling (if necessary) - you must have begun your final piece by the last lesson of the week!
3. To begin working on your final outcome 

TASKS

KEY FOCUS To ensure you are organised and prepared to begin your final outcome - do you have your material? pattern? equipment? 

ONE TO ONE During your one to one we will discuss your intentions/progress on your final outcome and discuss the grade you are currently working at and your overall predicted grade 

Homework:

To continue work on your final outcome - remember you should be spending 4.5 hours per week on your independent work! 

Lessons 34-36: Final sampling/Final outcome

Starter: November review discussion 

In groups discuss the questions raised in the November review - 

• I am enjoying this course
• I feel supported in this subject
• I feel that the way lessons are delivered enables me to learn
• I feel my skills are developing
• I feel the feedback I receive from my teacher enables me to improve 

As a group discuss strategies to address these points under the headings 'Things Claire could try' 'Things I could try' and make a series of written suggestions! 

Lesson aims: To continue problem solving and developing final ideas and/or to begin creation of the final piece

Lesson Objectives (during this lesson you will):

1. Have a one to one this week to discuss the grade you are currently working at and the grade you are predicted overall

2. Selected groups will work on strategies to improve sketchbooks/boards to devise individual targets following peer and formative feedback 

3.  Continue sampling and/or begin to make components for your final piece

FEEDBACK

Read through your formative feedback (back of sketchbook/boards) and see post it notes (where given) use this feedback to devise activities for yourself this week - you must act upon all feedback given in order to improve! 

10 OUT OF 10

Before starting your final outcome reflect on your sketchbook work - look at each piece individually and rate it out of 10 - what would you give it? If it is lower than a 7 reflect on the following:

• Why is it there?
• Could it simply be removed?
• What could you do to improve it?

KEY FOCUS

A key focus for this week is to reflect on your sketchbook work and really identify successful work - make sure this is what you are developing for your final outcome! 

Homework: 

- Continue to act upon feedback

- continue sampling and/or final piece 

DEADLINE MONDAY 9TH DECEMBER

You will present your sketchbook in groups next week and then have more in-depth one-to-ones! Be prepared!
